Tabula Rasa

I've hit the big time at work. Sort of. For the first time in my life, I have a placard with my name on it, indicating that this is where I sit. True, said placard had a typo on it at first. And I share the desk with someone else. But it's still pretty cool.

My desk partner, Lindsey, has decorated our cube with some pretty standard items, from pictures of her family to a ceramic cowboy hat/pen holder to an autographed Sarah McLachlan poster to something that appears to be a pagan garland of sorts. There was plenty of room for her to personalize our workspace because, as usual, I put absolutely no effort into doing the same myself.

I'm typing this up in my bedroom, surrounded by four walls devoid of adornment. I don't wear jewelry of any kind except a watch occasionally. I have never entered anything in that permanent status "Write something about yourself" area on Facebook. I'm just not a decorating kind of guy. There are a number of reasons for this:

--I have no art, fancy framed pictures, or inspirational messages to put up.
--I have no interest in spending money on those kinds of things.
--I'm constantly staring at a TV or computer screen (or occasionally a book) and wouldn't notice those things if they were there.
--But most of all, I don't decorate because of the permanence of it. I'm unwilling to commit to one picture or poster because it implies that I've rejected all others. I have plenty of t-shirts and have made plenty of status updates endorsing a particular movie or toy or junk food item, but those can (and should) be changed on a regular basis. But if I put a Batman poster on my wall or become an official "fan" of Arrested Development, I must prefer those things to all others I didn't show the same consideration to.

So am I crazy? Or am I just using that reasoning as an excuse to cover up the fact that I'm indecisive, lazy, and/or cheap?

I usually fill up my desk and cube walls with tons of pictures and trinkets. It's a good distraction of happiness when work gets me down.

Congrats on hitting the "big time"

1. Let's hop a midnight flight to NYC in the spring!!!!!
2. Congrats!
3. I never decorated my work area until I started performing, even now the only things up are the 8.5x11 posters for my shows and my family photos...but the family photos are in an overhead cabinet that shuts. I don't have much artwork at home other than what has been gifted to me. I have a commitment problem too!

Dear Deskmate,

While I claim to be the president of your unofficial fanclub, or official fanclub, or whatever seems appropriate that day, I must proclaim my deep disappointment in the recent discrepancies I've found in your recent post "Tabula Rasa."

The ceramic cowboy hat that you may or may not use to house your writing utensils IS NOT ceramic, nor a cowboy hat, but in fact, a fine art - hand-glassblown vessel.

Perhaps you are wondering how I know this? Mostly because I slaved away in front of a 2000 degree pot of hot molten glass to make it.

Just sayin.

I think you are just thinking about things way too much. But, to start you out I'm going to send you the framed picture of that sanitation facility that was in our bathroom when we lived in Orem. There is no way you have other sanitation facilities that you prefer better than that one.

Baby steps Jeff.

I'm behind on my blogs but you only had 3 posts for me to read anyway. I used to say I could only eat small fruit (little bananas, clementines, grapes) because I couldn't commit to big fruit. I think that's the only way we're similar... but I know whatcha mean!

yep, i think you're crazy. it's more than okay to display artwork and memorabilia that span all areas of your interests--as you know, i have everything from fine art to simpsons toys to hockey sticks to photos and much more. and even if people do judge you based on your decor, it is more likely to be based on their tastes compared against yours rather than their inference that your coconut monkey bank and poster of the ultimate warrior are the only two things you care about in the world.

in contrast, i have only a few decorative items on my desk at work; there isn't a ton of personality to my surroundings there. three key reasons why: i don't want to risk having my stuff disappear, i don't care if my co-workers know much about me outside work, and, like you, i spend more time staring at a screen than staring at my desk or walls.

the end of this novel. yeesh! <=]
